Adtoption - A Golden Opportunity

GOLDEN RETRIEVERS ARE LIKE POTATO CHIPS, YOU CAN NEVER HAVE JUST ONE!

Available Goldens

Please read our Adoption Requirements first.

Please note that any Golden scheduled for, or going through, heartworm treatment will not be available for potential adopters to meet until the heartworm treatment is complete. Unfortunately, many rescued Goldens have heartworms when they come into a rescue program. The treatment is difficult for the dog. We want the dog to remain as calm as possible while they are undergoing treatment. Goldens In Recovery may be found below the Goldens available for immediate adoption.

As we receive Goldens into our program, we will show the pictures and biographies of those in our care. They will be available for foster care and adoption to loving, responsible, permanent homes.

Each Golden taken in by GRRH receives a thorough exam by a licensed veterinarian, neutered/spayed, brought to date on vaccinations, and treated for heartworms, if necessary. Your tax deductible donations make it possible for GRRH to carry out its mission. We are a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.

Ask your employer if they provide matching funds for donations to non-profit organizations. Many large companies do and you can double your contribution at no addition cost to you! If you have any questions or your company requires a 501(c)(3) Certification, please email us: goldens@grrh.org.

Many of the intakes are nuggets in the rough. These pictures, sent to us by the family that adopted both Max and Meg (see Happy Endings story), tell the story better than words of what love, nutrition and a little veterinary care can do!

Foster and adoption may not always be easy but it can be extremely rewarding as shown and told below:

Max when he first arrived at GRRH.

Max 4 months later.

Meg when she first came to the GRRH.

Meg 5 months later.

Shiloh Before

Shiloh Afterwards with her new brothers.

Senior Dogs

The following letter from one of GRRH's supporters says it all...

We cannot thank you enough for rescuing dear Winfield from the "pound" he was turned in to!!

He was so lovable, adorable, elegant and charming!  We did everything we could to make sure his last years were good enough so that whatever went before would be quickly forgotten.  I just know we all did OK because he smiled at us all the time and followed me from room to room every day.

There was not a friend or family member that didn't love our Winfield and he KNEW it and loved it!  To have so many people love you was wonderful for him.

He was originally a "foster" dog but no one was willing to give him up!  He was a loving companion to our Golden with cancer for the first year...he simply nuzzled and sat with her and provided love and companionship 24/7.  When we brought home "the puppy" he was also up to the task of "raising her" and what a job it was!!

She has been the only puppy we have ever had that didn't eat the furniture, rugs, and whatever else was in the way.  Our beloved Winfield let her use him as a diving board, let her bite him endlessly, played "growly" with her and any time they rested or were asleep, they were ALWAYS touching.

My "rescue" was my first rescue, my first male dog, and the first elderly dog I have had....my other Goldens have not lived past 8 or 9 years old...Winfield was 14 years old!!!!

Please, please tell people that the elderly dogs are so devoted, so lovable...what a heartwarming experience.  Please do not pass the "old ones" by...the love goes both ways!!

Sincerely,

Boyd & Chloe

NEW ARRIVALS

These Goldens have recently arrive and we don't know much about them yet. As we get to know them better we will move them to the next section with more information.

Amelia

Amelia is about  12-13 weeks old, 15lbs. and so sweet and easy going. She was an owner turn-in to shelter. Although she is mostly golden, you can see she has some spaniel in her. Just after she came in she was diagnosed with Parvo, since then she has been treated and will soon go home to a new foster. More to come as she is settles in and her health improves.

Bear II

Bear and his buddy Wesson were both turned over together to GRRH by a family that couldn’t keep them. Right now both are a little too skinny and in need some serious GRRH TLC. Both are extremely sweet and gentle, they seem to respond to commands. We’ll know more about them once they go to their foster family next week. Bear is heartworm negative.

Jenny

This beautiful red golden is about a year old. She loves to run and play chase in the backyard. Jenny soaks up all the love you want to give her, content to have her front paws and head laying in your lap. Jenny is healthy and up to date on all her shots. She will be spayed next week, after which she will be ready for adoption. More on Jenny as we get to her know her at her foster home.

Mikey

He is a small very young boy... maybe a year old and about 30lbs. Right now he is a little scared and shy, but that is to be expected when one so young end up in a shelter. He just went to his foster family last week and is already coming out of his shell. He’s very sweet and gentle, he just sits in your lap and leans into your chest wanting to beloved on. More to come soon.

Austin and Travis

These two little 8 month old boys were found wandering the streets together, they are littermates and very dedicated to each other.  Both boys are about 45lbs., heartworm negative and healthy.  They are both very active and are in need of some training, as all puppies do. More to come on them when they go to their foster homes.

Wesson

Wesson and his buddy Bear were both turned over together to GRRH by a family that couldn’t keep them. Right now both are a little too skinny and in need some serious GRRH TLC. Both are extremely sweet and gentle, they seem to respond to commands. We’ll know more about them once they go to their foster family next week. Wesson is heartworm positive and will have to undergo treatment once he is at a good weight.

AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION

Definition of Adoption Pending - GRRH does not permit Goldens that have not been spayed/neutered or undergoing medical treatment to be adopted. Because puppies are not spayed/neutered until 6 months of age, you will sometimes see them listed as Adoption Pending for several months. However, we do place many of these Goldens in loving homes for foster care and many of the foster families decide to adopt their fosters upon their successful treatment. Families that foster Goldens for GRRH always have the privilege of  adopting the Goldens that they foster.

Ami

June 11, 2008 - Adoption Pending

Ami and Doug were owner turn ins to an East Texas shelter.  Ami is a beautiful 3 month old Golden with a face that will melt your heart.  She is very curious, loves to play and is a typical golden puppy.

Brutus

June 10, 2008 - Adoption Pending

Dark Chocolate Anyone?  These two are not quite Goldens (Chocolate Labs to be exact!), but they are just as sweet as can be.  At 7 weeks they are just beginning to be independent and very curious about the world around them. Both are being crate trained at this time and are learning very fast.

Brutus (male and the larger of the two) is just a little teddy bear but from his size we expect he is going to be a gorgeous BIG boy.  He is full of energy and very alert to his surroundings.  He loves to play but can also calm down for a belly rub!  Even at his young age, he is already learning quickly to go "outside" and loves to run in the yard.

Doug

June 15, 2008 - Adoption Pending

Doug came in with his littermate, Ami from an East Texas Shelter. He is 3 months old and so cute.  He has long Golden ears and great big brown eyes. His foster Mom says, Doug is so funny! Doug hates the heat so during the day while I'm playing outside with the kids he'll go stand by the door so I'll let him in and he'll just watch us from inside. At night, he likes to chase and eat the June bugs so I have to pick him up and bring him in the house - he won't come in on his own. Also, he doesn't know he can jump off our bed so he stays in bed with us until we get up in the morning and if we all leave the room he barks and barks until we come back in and get him down. He's really going to entertain whoever adopts him - he's a character!  Doug is ready to go to a family who will love and care for him.

Dunne

Dunne is VERY easy. He is crate trained, house-broken, and good with other dogs. He likes to play, sleep, and be close to the people who are caring for him. I haven't heard him bark yet, so he's obviously not a barker. He's not a runner, so he could be trained to come really easily. He's not a counter surfer so far either. He is very well behaved, knows basic commands like sit and lay down. He loves treats, and laying down next to you to get his belly or ears scratched. He's a little attention starved and has some skin issues which are being treated, but still very pleasant to be with. After his initial excitement getting home, he just lays down at your feet and sleeps next to you.

Dunne is about 60 lbs and about 6 to 8 years old. He was rescued from a local shelter but he is heartworm free so he is ready to go to his new family!

Heath

April 15, 2008 - Adoption Pending

Heath came from an area shelter with his Mom, Candy and sister, Snickers. Both Snickers and Heath were diagnosed with Parvo shortly after arriving at the clinic. Unfortunately, Snickers did not survive. Heath, however, is doing great!  He is now in a wonderful foster home and is a fun loving energetic puppy. He is about 12 weeks old and cute as a button. Heath will be small. He is not full Golden but has a huge Golden personality.

Hershey

June 8, 2008 - Adoption Pending

Dark Chocolate Anyone?  These two are not quite Goldens (Chocolate Labs to be exact!), but they are just as sweet as can be.  At 7 weeks they are just beginning to be independent and very curious about the world around them. Both are being crate trained at this time and are learning very fast.

Hershey is as sweet as her name implies, but also is VERY into what is around her.  The more active of the two, she is constantly checking out anything new and is not afraid to sniff, scratch or climb just to see what is there! She already thrives on attention and learns very quickly.  She loves to look up at you with those eyes in hopes of getting picked up!

Homer

Homer is a wonderful senior gentleman from a shelter. Though his white face shows his age, when you look into his eyes, you can still see a mischievous puppy looking back at you. For a 10+ year old, Homer is in good condition. He is heartworm negative, but will need to be neutered before adoption. Just yesterday, Homer told me that all he needs is a chance to show someone just how wonderful he is. Homer still has life to live and lots of love to give. More on Homer as we get to know him better.

Lady

Lady is a beautiful 1 ½ year old Golden with a reddish coat.  She weighs about 55 lbs, is very athletic, and is a joy to watch as she hurtles around the fields at top speed.  Lady is always in the mood for playtime and has boundless amounts of energy if she has a limit, we haven’t found it yet!  Although she is very obedient and will go to her bed anytime you ask her to settle down, this dog is not one to rest and relax for long, she needs a good amount of daily exercise and playtime to keep her stimulated.

Lady is a smart dog, with above average intelligence and a fine eye for detail.  She doesn’t miss a trick and you can’t get away with hiding a ball from her, she will search relentlessly until she finds it!  Like all Goldens she loves people and is also showing signs of strong bonding with a single person, leading us to believe that she would be very devoted to an owner who plays with her, challenges her, and trains her to keep her sharp.

Libby

May 17, 2008 - Adoption Pending

Libby is a one year old female who was given up by her owner. She is tall and blond and seems to be extremely sweet. She is also doing quite fine in her crate when she is left alone. Her foster Dad tells us she is still quite timid as new sounds and sights can surprise her and she does like to be close to you. She has a very gentle mouth when taking treats and willingly gives up her bone when her foster Dad removes it from her mouth (he gives it her back!), and she is fine with being petted when she is eating. As we are told she may have some food issues we are slowly trying her out to see how that might manifest itself. We have yet to see how she is with other dogs so more on Libby as we get to know her better.

Missy

Missy, unfortunately, has been returned to us. We adopted her to another family in October thinking this was her forever home; however, they are now moving out of state and can’t take her with them. Missy is thunderphobic and if not crated during storms has been destructive. Although over the counter or prescription drugs may help control her thunderphobia, none have been tried to date. Missy is a four year old small golden. She is spayed, heartworm negative, current on all vaccinations and housebroken. Missy does have a crooked tail most likely from an accident when she was young. She loves to play, loves the water and other dogs and most of all, loves attention.  Please help this little girl and give her the loving forever home she deserves.

Nathan

February 21, 2008 - Adoption Pending

Nathan is a stray from an area shelter. We think this beautiful boy is 6 - 7 years old. Nathan is already neutered and ready to go to his forever home. He is a little underweight and is currently being treated for an eye infection.  Nathan is super friendly and personality plus! More on Nathan as we get to know him better.

Reagan

April 5, 2008 - Adoption Pending

This little cutie is Reagan - a 3 month old male from an area shelter. When he arrived at the shelter, this adorable little guy had an injured back leg that he would not use. But, by the time he finished his mandatory shelter stay and came to GRRH, the leg was much better, and he is using it normally. Reagan has been given his first set of shots (he will need a booster) and is ready for a foster or foster-to-adopt home. Reagan can be officially adopted after he is neutered.

Tyler

June 15, 2008 - Adoption Pending

Tyler is also about three months old and Taylor's best buddy and littermate. He is great at chasing the ball or any other toy that is thrown for him. He has fun chasing Taylor around the yard and playing with his foster big brother, Val. He does well with other dogs as well.

Tyler thinks children are great, and loves to snuggle up in his foster family's daughter's lap at the end of the day. He too is learning about cats and working on being house trained. Tyler will often go into his crate during the day to take a nap, and sleeps all night as well.

Tyler is up to date on his shots and heartworm negative. This adorable puppy is ready to go with home to his forever family.

Goldens in Recovery

Please scroll all the way down the page and to the right edge to view all of the Goldens available.

These Goldens are recovering from various medical treatments and are not ready for adoption at this time. GRRH cannot promise you that these dogs will be available for adoption; however, you may consider one of these dogs for your family upon completion of their treatment. In many cases foster families are needed to care for them during their treatment. For more information, please complete a foster application indicating that you would like to foster one of the Goldens in recovery. Please check back for updates often. It is our hope that these precious dogs will totally recover and go to their forever home with you.

Bernard

Bernard is from an area shelter. He is a very loving Golden and is one of those boys that comes up and puts his head on your knee to have his head and ears scratched.  Bernard is calm, very gentle, happy, and well mannered. He is heartworm positive and has not been neutered. Bernard's initial blood work shows that he may also have some problems with his kidney function. Additional tests are being run, so we will know more in a few days. In his pictures, Bernard is wearing an E-collar because he was chewing on a couple of hot spots. The hot spots are most likely caused by the flea infestation poor Bernard had when he came from the shelter.

Bernard is a very special golden that will capture your heart after just one look into his soulful eyes.  More on Bernard when we receive results from his additional tests.

Boston

Boston and Dixie were turned in together by their owner due to financial difficulties. Boston is a big beautiful boy. He is 8 ½ years old.  Boston is a sweet and well mannered. He is housebroken and obedient. He loves children, gets along great with other dogs and loves a good bath!  Boston is heartworm positive and will have to undergo heartworm treatment soon. Boston needs a foster home and more important he needs a forever home. More to come on Boston as we get to know him better.

Dixie

Dixie and Boston were turned in together by their owner due to financial difficulties. Dixie is 7 years old.  She is a very sweet and gentle.  You cannot tell that Dixie is middle-aged.  She is very energetic and loves to play fetch!  She loves children and gets along well with other dogs.  Dixie is spayed but unfortunately she is heartworm positive and will have to undergo heartworm treatment soon.  Dixie, like Boston, is eagerly waiting for her foster home and ultimately her new forever home.  Dixie would make a wonderful friend and companion for any home.

Eddie

June 5, 2008 - Adoption Pending

Eddie was surrendered to an area shelter by his owners who indicate that he was too much dog. Eddie is a big boy weighing 72 lbs. He is very strong and will need some work on the leash, but he does know basic sit type commands. Eddie can be described as happy, loving, active, and gorgeous. He was very good on the ride home from the vet today -- he is one of those loves that sits in the back and puts his head on your shoulder while you drive. He is a young boy (about 1 1/2 years old) that needs an active family. Eddie is already neutered, but will need to undergo heartworm treatment. If you are interested in Eddie, he is eligible for our foster-to-adopt program.

Hudson II

April 5, 2008 - Adoption Pending

Hudson is a 2 year old stray from a coastal shelter. He has a great disposition and is calm for such a young dog. Hudson has a gorgeous red coat. He is a little thin, but is eating very well. Hudson has been treated for a severe tick infection and for internal parasites. He was neutered last week and will start his heartworm treatment soon. Hudson is good with other dogs, adores people, and can be a bit of a "couch potato." Hudson will make a great addition to a lucky family.

Lindsey

Lindsey is a medium size (40ish lbs) cutie with twinkling eyes. She, with Lucas, was found roaming the streets and taken to the SPCA. She is about 5 years old and may be a lab mix. She is a real sweetie that loves to give kisses and get her head rubbed and enjoys riding in the car. She is now spayed and has begun her heartworm treatment but could go to a foster to adopt home.

Lucas

Lucas is a large (78 lbs), handsome, red male Golden with a thick coat, thought to be about 6 years old. He, together with Lindsey, was found roaming the streets and taken to the SPCA. Lucas has a typical Golden, friendly personality and is very easy going and laid back. He is friendly with other dogs and would probably do well with a family as he is a funny, entertaining boy. He certainly wants to be included in everything going on in the home and enjoys being petted, of course!! He is neutered and is half way through his heartworm treatment, which is going well, and could go to a foster to adopt home now.

Mack

April 28, 2008 - Adoption Pending

Mack is a big, laid back teddy bear! He was found running around a subdivision by a Good Samaritan who, along with one of our GRRH volunteers, managed to rescue him by bribing him with hot dogs. Since he was living outside on his own for a while, he is relearning his inside manners. Initially, he was very shy, but he has come out of his shell with his foster family, although he is sometimes still timid. Mack loves to play fetch and get lots of petting, and is great with children and dogs of all sizes. He is very tolerant and gentle. He is house-trained, knows how to sit and come, and doesn't jump up at people or bark. Mack is a big boy with a wavy reddish coat. He is neutered and healthy apart from a light case of heartworm, for which he will be treated soon.

Maggie May

Maggie May is a sweet little girl who was found on the street as a stray and taken in by a good Samaritan. Her age is estimated between 1 and 2 years old. Maggie is small in size and fairly thin at only 40 pounds but was able to be spayed once she came to us. This poor girl has had Sarcoptic mange, an ear infection and she is heartworm positive. Now she is finished her mange medication she looks great. Originally, she was very shy and can still be a little wary of some men. She frightened easily and sometimes went on the defensive with other dogs. This was all understandable because the vet believes the scabs on her face, head and ears were from being recently attacked by another dog. Now she has been with her foster Dad for a few weeks, she has definitely become more confident, and her personality is coming through and she wants to play. She also likes a good belly rub and will roll over for you. She is great with children but we are not sure about cats.

Megan

July 10, 2008 - Adoption Pending

Megan was abandoned by her owners when they moved out of the country. She is a beautiful red-head with a great big golden smile! Megan seems to know some basic commands. She is playful but generally calm for a 2 year old. Megan is heartworm positive and will need to undergo treatment before she can be adopted. More soon!

Oscar

Oscar is a 4 year old from a local shelter. He will need to be neutered and undergo heartworm treatment. Walks well on a leash and rides well in the car. More on Oscar coming soon.

Rocky

June 5, 2008 - Adoption Pending

Rocky's owners turned him in at an area shelter. His turn-in sheet indicates they did not have time for him. Rocky is a VERY nice, calm Golden estimated to be 4 or 5 years old. He has a really pretty red coat and a beautiful Golden smile. Rocky is being neutered this week and will need to undergo heartworm treatment before he can be adopted. However, Rocky is looking for a foster (or a foster-to-adopt) home that will take him through his heartworm treatment. More to come on Rocky as we get to know him better.

Shiner

Shiner was picked up as a stray and taken to a local shelter. He is estimated to be 4 years old. Shiner is happy, active, and outgoing. He has been neutered but will need to undergo heartworm treatment before he can be adopted. We will have more on Shiner as we get to know him.

Stevie

April 15, 2008 - Adoption Pending

Stevie is small, adorable female from a local shelter. She is real sweetheart that loves people. She is estimated to be 2-3 years old. Stevie seems to have a calm personality, but she does not like to be crated or kenneled and does try to escape when confined. Stevie is already spayed, but will need to undergo heartworm treatment. More on Stevie as we get to know her better.
