Written by an unknown Doctor of Veterinary Medicine..........
From time to time, people tell me, "lighten up, it's just a dog," or, "that's a lot of money for just a dog." They don't understand the distance traveled, the time spent, or the costs involved for "just a dog." Some of my proudest moments have come about with "just a dog." Many hours have passed and my only company was "just a dog," but I did not once feel slighted. Some of my saddest moments have been brought about by "just a dog," and in those days of darkness, the gentle touch of "just a dog" gave me comfort and reason to overcome the day.
If you, too, think it's "just a dog," then you probably don't understand phrases like "just a friend," "just a sunrise," or "just a promise." "Just a dog" brings into my life the very essence of friendship, trust, and pure unbridled joy. "Just a dog" brings out the compassion and patience that make me a better person. Because of "just a dog", I will rise early, take long walks and look longingly to the future. So for me and folks like me, it's not "just a dog" but an embodiment of all the hopes and dreams of the future, the fond memories of the past, and the pure joy of the moment. "Just a dog" brings out what's good in me and diverts my thoughts away from myself and the worries of the day. I hope that someday they can understand that it's not "just a dog", but the thing that gives me humanity and keeps me from being "just a man or woman."
So the next time you hear the phrase "just a dog" just smile... because they "just don't understand." A PET'S TEN COMMANDMENTS......... 1. My life is likely to last 10-15 years. Any separation from you is likely to be painful. 2. Give me time to understand what you want of me. 3. Place your trust in me. It is crucial for my well-being. 4. Don't be angry with me for long and don't lock me up as punishment. You have your work, your friends, your entertainments, but I have only you. 5. Talk to me. Even if I don't understand your words, I do understand your voice when speaking to me. 6. Be aware that however you treat me, I will never forget it. 7. Before you hit me, before you strike me, remember that I could hurt you, and yet, I choose not to bite you. 8. Before you scold me for being lazy or uncooperative, ask yourself if something might be bothering me. Perhaps I'm not getting the right food, I have been in the sun too long, or my heart might be getting old or weak. 9. Please take care of me when I grow old. You too, will grow old. 10. On the ultimate difficult journey, go with me please. Never say you can't bear to watch. Don't make me face this alone. Everything is easier for me if you are there, because I love you so. GRRH is dedicated to the welfare of the Goldens that we rescue. As volunteers, our greatest reward is to see rescued dogs placed with a new home where they will be safe, happy and loved forever. To be considered as an adoptive home, you must meet and sign the Adoption Requirements and complete the Adoption Application. The Goldens who come to us include males and females of all ages. As a rule, our orphans make wonderful companions and adjust well to their new families. We want our applicants to know that rescued dogs come from a variety of backgrounds. Some will be older dogs, including well-behaved and cared for pets whose owners have died or become ill. However, many dogs will require behavioral work due to a lack of training, neglect or abuse in the dog's previous environment. A patient and loving owner can make all the difference. The rewards of seeing such Goldens become the loyal and happy pets they were meant to be is unforgettable. You can eliminate the financial stress of providing unexpected medical attention if your adopted Golden becomes ill or has an accident. Insurance is available through ShelterCare. Please click here for the details: The adoption donation for a GRRH Golden Retriever is generally $250. For puppies under the age of 6 months, the donation is $300. This donation helps to pay the expenses incurred for the dog's medical treatment and care. GRRH Goldens will be spayed or neutered before being adopted. |
